The Slice: The city of friends of friends

This sort of thing happens in Spokane all the time.

One recent Saturday, I was at the home of some friends. I noticed that they had a neon art piece I recognized as the work of another friend of mine who lives here in Spokane.

When was the last time you made an unexpected connection and discovered you were part of a Spokane friendship triangle?

No Marmot Lodge meeting this month: But there is one action item on the agenda.

I’d love it if people who appeared in The Slice as little kids long ago would send me pictures of themselves with their own children.

A question for those with asthma: Which has given you trouble over the years? A) Smoke from a campfire. B) Smoke from a fireplace. C) Second-hand marijuana smoke. D) Air pollution in China. E) Other.

Slice answers: “The biggest thing keeping me from running for elected office is a massive desire for a non-stressful life,” wrote Nancy Meuler.

Then there was this from Terry Hontz. “The biggest thing keeping me from running for elected office is I would never want to become like the narcissistic, incompetent idiots for whom I worked for many of my 36 years as an employee of Spokane County.”

A bicycle tour of Spokane: There’s a new multi-stage event coming to next month’s Bike to Work Week. It’s called “Commute of the Century,” and it’s a chance for cyclists to assess and then weigh in on the city’s bike-riding experience.

There’s a link with details in The Slice Blog at www.spokesman.com.

Warm-up question: When do you put your trash out for collection? A) The night before pick-up. B) The morning of. C) Five minutes after the truck has rumbled by. D) “I usually forget.” E) Other.

Today’s Slice question: Let’s say you inherit some fishing gear from a beloved relative. But you don’t fish.

Sure, you intend to treat the tackle with respect. But would it be better to give it to someone who might actually use it?

Of course, I guess the challenge then would be finding a person who deserves such a gift.

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; email pault@spokesman. com. I have almost no chance of recognizing people if they are wearing sunglasses and are out of context, so don’t take it personally.
