In brief: Coeur d’Alene police arrest fugitive after standoff

Coeur d’Alene police on Saturday arrested a man listed recently as the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force fugitive of the week.

Nathan T. Bussell, 21, of Hayden, was taken to the Kootenai County Jail and booked on charges of being a felony fugitive from justice and obstructing officers. He also has an outstanding warrant for aggravated battery.

Police responded to 512 E. Foster Ave. around 11:30 a.m. on reports that Bussell was staying there. They tried to make contact with Bussell, but he refused to acknowledge police commands to surrender, a Coeur d’Alene Police Department news release said.

A SWAT team was called around 1:30 p.m. to help take Bussell into custody. SWAT officers entered the home after Bussell continued to ignore police commands, the release said. Shortly after 5 p.m., Bussell was located inside the home and taken into custody without incident.

Crews rescue injured hiker

It took Spokane Valley fire crews nearly an hour to find a teenage girl injured while hiking in the Dishman Hills Natural Area on Friday evening.

The girl injured her knee and ankle and couldn’t walk out, Deputy Chief Andy Hail said.

Firefighters received the call for help at 6:16 p.m. The first firefighters arrived at one of the trail heads within minutes but did not have an exact location for the girl, Hail said. Two of her friends attempted to hike out and lead rescuers to her.

The girl was located at 7:15 p.m. and carried out on a rescue litter, Hail said. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
