Sopko pitches Zags to victory

Andrew Sopko gave up three hits and an unearned run in eight innings in pitching host Gonzaga to a 2-1 West Coast Conference baseball victory over Santa Clara on Sunday.

Sopko (3-2) walked one while striking out six. Karl Myers pitched the ninth for his second save.

Sam Brown went 3 for 4 for the Bulldogs (14-21, 5-7) and Cory LeBrun added two hits. Joey Harris brought in Brown and LeBrun with a second-inning double.

The Bulldogs took two of three games in the series with the Broncos (12-22, 8-7). Gonzaga is host to Washington State on Tuesday night at 6.

• Jace Fry (7-1) gave up just three hits over eight innings and Michael Conforto drove in three runs to lead Oregon State (27-7, 11-4 Pac-12) over Washington State 8-1 in the rubber game of their three-game series in Pullman.

Starter Jason Monda (1-3) took the loss for the Cougars (16-16, 7-5). Nick Tanielu had two of the Cougars’ four hits for WSU with a triple and double.

• Stanford (12-16, 4-8 Pac-12) scored four runs in the first inning and rode the early lead to a 6-3 victory over Washington at Seattle to avoid a three-game sweep by the Huskies (24-7-1, 12-3).

• Spencer Ansett threw a five-hit shutout and Matt Nelson hit a grand slam to lead Whitworth to an 8-0 victory over visiting Pacific (11-18, 4-14 Northwest Conference) in the rubber game of their three-game series.

Gerhard Muelheims added a two-run homer for the Pirates (10-19, 7-11), who picked up their fourth win in five games.

Ansett (3-2) walked one and struck out one.

Nelson was 3 for 4 with five RBIs and Nick Motsinger was 3 for 3.

Golf

Blake Snyder finished at 1-under 215 over three rounds for a fourth-place tie in leading Washington State’s men’s golf team to an eighth-place finish in the 12-team Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Cougars finished the 54 holes at 34-over 898. The host Iowa Hawkeyes (11-under 853) won the competition led by medalist Steven Ihm (7-under 209).

Softball

Madi Perez (14-5) pitched a five-hit shutout in the first game then picked up the victory in relief in the second game as Whitworth concluded its regular season with a 6-0, 10-9 sweep of Lewis & Clark (11-24, 7-19 Northwest Conference) in Portland.

Julia Johnson hit her third home run in three games for the Pirates in the opener, giving her nine this season and 24 for her career, both school records. Kayla Batastini added her first homer of the season. Taylor Gilbert went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Tessa Matthews added two hits.

The Pirates (26-14, 18-10) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the second game. Bailey Kasler hit a two-run double to tie the score and came home with the go-ahead run on a single by Batastini, her second hit of the game.

Whitworth plays in the conference tournament at Linfield on Friday and Saturday.

• CC Spokane defeated Chemeketa 6-5 and Lower Columbia 7-5 at the NWAACC Crossover tournament in Mt. Vernon, Wash. The Sasquatch finished 3-1 in the two-day tournament.
