Obituary: Scharff, John B.

Age 79

SCHARFF, John B.

(Age 79) John was born in Glendive, MT on March 16, 1935 to John and Ila Scharff and passed away peacefully on April 11, 2014 at Hospice House in Spokane, WA, with his family by his side.

At the age of 16 he was hired as a “crew caller” for the Northern Pacific Railway in Glendive.

After graduating from high school, John served two years in the US Army, then returned to the railroad where he held various operating and managerial positions in many cities during his 40 year career.

In 1959 he met and married the love of his life, Kathleen (Kay) Kenyon.

Upon John’s retirement from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1991, he and Kay settled in Spokane.

John was a quiet and private man who enjoyed spending time with his family and beloved granddog, Frankie.

He was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, John is survived by his son Jerry Scharff (Rita) of Ione, WA; daughter Kimberly Scharff of Issaquah, WA; grandson Austin Scharff; sister Fran Darfler of Helena, MT, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Steven, and sisters Mary Crisafulli and Zella Swett.

We would like to thank the staff of Holy Family Hospital and Hospice House in Spokane for the exceptional care and support they provided to John and our family during the past month.

At his request no services will be held.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association or Shriners Hospital in Spokane.
