Obituary: Sylvester, William Ernest

SYLVESTER, William Ernest Service for William Ernest Sylvester is scheduled for 10 am, Monday April 28, 2014, at the Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, W. 5100 Wellesley Avenue, followed by burial at Fairmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday April 26, 2014 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Mr. Sylvester, a retired banker, died Wednesday at age 87.

He was born in Missoula, Montana and moved to Spokane in 1933.

He married Florence Johnson of Coeur d’Alene, ID July 13th, 1946.

He started his banking career at the East Side Branch of the Old National Bank in 1944.

During his career he was responsible for the early automation effort for the bank, installing the first computer in Spokane in 1962.

He was a member of ONB Senior Management in the 1970’s.

After the ONB merger with U.S. Bank in 1987, he was transferred to Seattle where he retired in 1989.

Since retirement he has made his home in Spokane.

He was past president of the Spokane Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.

National Director for the Institute of Banking from 1966 to 1969.

Past president of the Spokane Chapter Bank Administration Institute and State Vice President for the BAI.

A past Chairman of the Operations Committee of the Washington Bankers Association, and a past Chairman of the Transportation Committee of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce.

He was an AARP defensive driving instructor for many years.

Survivors include his wife, at the home; two daughters, Diana Nottage of Coeur d’Alene, and Kathlyn Springer of Spokane; four grandchildren: Ronda Williamson, Amy Ross of Coeur d’Alene, Heidi Cooke of Lynden, Washington and Adam Springer of Spokane.

He has eight great-grandchildren: Emma and Magnus Williamson, Marisa Poole, Andrea Wilkins, Jalen Doss; Beckett, Wyatt and Baylor Cooke.

He has three great-great-grandchildren Annika, Ava and Hunter Hassek.

He was loved by all.
