Obituary: Spencer, Betty L.

Age 84

SPENCER, Betty L. Betty Lee Spencer celebrated her Heaven Day on July 27, 2014 in Spokane with her four children by her side.

She was born November 3, 1929 in Spokane, the daughter of Emmett and Elsie (Clarke) Tierney.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 60 years V. Richard “Dick” Spencer in 2010.

She leaves behind her children Nancy (Jack) Kittilstved, Linda (Steve) Adams, Jim (Kate) Spencer and Janet (John) Roys all of Spokane; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mom was an only child, but she shared a sisterly love with her dear friend of nearly 50 years, Judy Barrington.

Betty was born in Spokane and attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Parish.

She then attended and graduated from Marycliff High School in 1947.

She graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in 1950.

Her work in nursing was a very rewarding accomplishment.

Mom took a break from nursing to raise her family.

She returned to her profession working for several years at the Paulsen Hospital where she also met some of her dearest friends.

Those friends are still a part of our family today.

Mom was incredibly proud of her Irish heritage.

She was always a “Fighting Irishman.”

Dad and Mom had the opportunity to visit Ireland as a 50th wedding anniversary gift from her son, Jim.

She often shared her memories of that trip and hoped to return there one day.

In addition to her family, Mom was devoted to her unwavering faith.

She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish for over 60 years and served both in the Women’s Club and Our Lady Queen Guild.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the friends and staff at Avalon Care Center where Mom resided for the past four years.

She did not hesitate to offer her suggestions for “proper nursing care” the way the nuns at Sacred Heart taught her!

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 6 from 10-5pm at Holy Cross Funeral Center Chapel, 7200 N. Wall St., Spokane.

Vigil services will also be Wednesday at 7pm and will be conducted at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 4420 N. Jefferson, Spokane.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 10am also at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with committal to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 25 West Nora Ave., Spokane, WA 99205.
