MLB notes: Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt out for remainder of season

Arizona Diamondbacks star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is going to miss the rest of the season because of a broken left hand.

Manager Kirk Gibson announced the news Sunday, two days after Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh reliever Ernesto Frieri.

Gibson put Goldschmidt’s rehabilitation timetable at eight weeks, with the season ending in late September. No surgery is expected.

Goldschmidt hit .300 with 19 home runs and 69 RBIs this season. A two-time All-Star, he led the NL with 125 RBIs last year and tied for the league lead with 36 homers while batting .302.

Goldschmidt turns 27 next month.

The Diamondbacks used Mark Trumbo at first base on Sunday and will rotate players at the position over the rest of the season.

“A little bit of a trial and error to see how it works,” Gibson said. “It’s going to be hard to replace Goldy over there with what he brought us with his consistency.”

McCutchen hobbled

Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen made an early exit in the eighth inning against Arizona because of discomfort on his left side.

McCutchen drove in the tying run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly. The NL MVP didn’t take his spot in center field in the bottom half.

A day earlier, McCutchen was hit in the lower back with a pitch. He said he thinks that was in retaliation for Pirates reliever Ernesto Frieri hitting Arizona star Paul Goldschmidt in the hand on Friday, ending his season with a broken bone.

Lights out in Tampa

A power outage delayed the game between the Los Angeles Angels and Tampa Bay Rays for 19 minutes in the third inning. Lightning struck a nearby power substation during a storm in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Clearing the bases

The Rangers acquired first baseman-outfielder Mike Carp on a waiver claim from the Red Sox. … The Twins have claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer off waivers from the Braves. … The Pirates signed free agent infielder Jayson Nix.
