Beal, Millsap, Wall cut from U.S. squad

Basketball: The U.S. men’s national team cut John Wall, Bradley Beal and Paul Millsap on Monday, a person with knowledge of the details said, leaving the roster at 16 players.

With Paul George lost to a broken right leg, the Americans will have to drop four more players before the World Cup of Basketball starts later this month in Spain. Remaining in the roster pool are: Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, former Washington State player Klay Thompson and his Golden State teammate Stephen Curry, Houston’s James Harden, Atlanta’s Kyle Korver, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas’ Chandler Parsons, Utah’s Gordon Hayward, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Denver’s Kenneth Faried, Detroit’s Andre Drummond and Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee.

They will report to Chicago for practices that begin Aug. 14.

• Spartans boot Kaminski:

Michigan State has dismissed Kenny Kaminski from its basketball program.

Spartans coach Tom Izzo suspended the 6-foot-8 forward twice last season for a total of four games and two exhibitions.

Kaminski made a Big Ten-best .494 percent of 3-point attempts last year as a redshirt freshman. He averaged 4.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 31 games last season.

Oh sets pace at Women’s Amateur

Golf: Australia’s Su-Hyun Oh shot a 4-under 66 in the U.S. Women’s Amateur to take the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying.

The 18-year-old Oh had six birdies and two bogeys at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York.

Hannah O’Sullivan of Paradise Valley, Arizona, was a stroke back, and Megan Khang of Rockland, Massachusetts, opened with a 68.

The top 64 after the second round today will advance to match play.

Hofland tops Tour of Utah after first stage

Cycling: Moreno Hofland announced his return from a serious injury by winning the 113.5-mile opening stage of the Tour of Utah in Cedar City, Utah.

The 22-year-old Dutch sprinter, who fractured ribs and vertebrae in his lower back at the Tour of California earlier, edged out SmartStop’s Jure Kocjan and Lampre-Merida’s Andrea Palini.

The top overall contenders, including defending champion Tom Danielson and former Grand Tour winners Chris Horner, Ivan Basso and Cadel Evans, finished safely in the peloton.

ATP calls off Israel Open

Tennis: The ATP tour canceled the inaugural Israel Open that was set to be played next month in Tel Aviv, Israel, because of security concerns “arising from the military conflict in the region.”

The tournament was set to be held Sept. 15-21 and would have been the first ATP tournament held in Israel since 1996.
