In brief: Kootenai Health links to Mayo

Kootenai Health has become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which gives the Coeur d’Alene-based hospital access to doctors and other services from the renowned health care provider.

The ability of doctors in Idaho to consult with specialists at the Mayo Clinic could mean patients won’t have to travel out of the area to receive the best care, Kootenai Health officials said at a news conference Tuesday.

“Our two organizations share the same commitment that health care should be provided close to home whenever possible,” said Jon Ness, Kootenai Health CEO.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network provides electronic consultation with clinic specialists; access to information compiled by Mayo doctors on disease management and treatment recommendations; and an electronic forum to discuss management of complex cancer cases, according to a news release.

The network, launched in 2011, now includes 30 member hospitals and clinics. The Mayo Clinic was founded in Rochester, Minnesota, and has additional locations in Arizona and Florida.

Power back for most customers

Avista Utilities as of Tuesday has restored power to all 48,000 customers who experienced outages in Saturday’s storm.

Inland Power and Light reported fewer than 600 customers without power around Deer Park and Colbert Tuesday evening.

In North Idaho, Northern Lights Inc. reported 450 outages and Pend Oreille Public Utility District reported 350 outages as of Tuesday evening. Kootenai Electric Cooperative was reporting no outages Tuesday afternoon.

Names sought for YWCA awards

Spokane’s YWCA chapter is asking for help to recognize women who’ve distinguished themselves through their professions or their service to the community.

Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 15 for the nonprofit’s annual Women of Achievement Awards. Awards are given in the following categories: arts and culture; business and industry; community enhancement; science, technology and environment; and the Carl J. Maxey Racial and Social Justice Award.

To nominate someone, visit ywcaspokane.org and download the nomination form, then mail, fax or email the completed form to the YWCA. A panel of judges will select the recipients, who will be honored at a luncheon on Oct. 1.
