Obituary: Mcgough, Marie L.
She spent her last hours amid her beautiful gardens, surrounded by her six loving children.
Marie was born March 31, 1926 in Madison, Wisconsin and moved with her parents, Clifford Elmer (Archie) Lampman and Eleanor Magdalene Roach Lampman to Moscow, Idaho.
While in Moscow, Marie’s sister Marjorie was born.
Marjorie Lampman McClaran preceded her in death on July 2, 2014.
Growing up in Moscow, Marie was an active participant in many organizations.
She was a member of Camp Fire Girls and was elected queen of Job’s Daughters.
She was President of Girls League at Moscow High School and was a hostess for USO during WWII.
She met her husband to be, John (Jack) Witt McGough, in Moscow and married him after his return from the service.
Marie graduated from the University of Idaho with a major in Business Administration and a minor in accounting.
While at U of I, she pledged Delta Gamma and would remain a dedicated and active DG member all of her life.
Before marriage, Marie worked as an executive secretary for the city of Lewiston, Idaho, the University of Idaho, Morrison-Knudson Company, the Veteran’s Administration, and Pacific Northwest Alloys.
After John completed his architectural degree at the University of Idaho, John and Marie moved to Spokane, Washington where John later formed the architectural firm of Walker and McGough.
Marie and John (Jack) would remain in Spokane for the rest of their lives, eventually opening their own firm, The McGough Group, of which Marie became the business manager in 1985.
While raising her six children, Marie also found time to be an integral part of the community she lived in.
She was President of the Women’s Architectural League (1965-66), President of Janes in Jeans Garden Club (1975), member of the Spokane Association for a Better Community (ABC), Campfire Leader, Preschool Coordinator, CCD teacher, Parish Council member and President for Our Lady of Fatima Church, Delta Gamma Province Collegiate Chairman (1979-82), Delta Gamma Director of Chapter Development (1982-1985), President of the Spokane Delta Gamma Alumnae (1985) and Delta Gamma Financial Advisor to Nu Chapter (1985 - 2001).
Marie maintained her civic involvement well into her later years, driving for Meals on Wheels and as an active member of the Board of Directors for Lilac Blind.
Marie McGough was passionate about the arts.
She maintained a longtime membership to the Spokane Symphony and regularly attended performances at the Civic Theater, Interplayers, and the Coeur d’ Alene Theater.
She instilled a love of music and an appreciation of art to all of her six children.
Marie was adored by her 8 grandchildren who affectionately called her “Gram”, and traveled the United States from California to Alaska to be a part of their lives.
She was their mentor and friend, always willing to listen, to share advice, and provide chocolate and sweets if needed.
After moving to the Touchmark Cottages, Marie continued to serve her community as both president and vice president, as well as serving on both the Garden and Events Committees.
Marie is survived by Patty McGough of Newport, Oregon; Margaret Donat and partner Russel Smith of Fairbanks, Alaska; Anne Coulson and husband Mike of Hermosa Beach, California; John McGough and wife Isabelle of Hailey, Idaho; Timothy McGough and wife Susan of Phoenix, Arizona; Eleanor McGough and spouse Kathie Smith of Minneapolis, Minnesota and eight grandchildren: Christina Donat Freston and husband Kasey, Nicholas Coulson, Aaron Donat, Matthew Coulson, Maxwell Malakoff and partner Christine Hill, Erin Coulson, Kelsey Ilebor and husband Promise, Shane McGough, and one great- grandchild, Rex Malakoff.
Marie will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.
She was a wonderful mother, mentor, and grandmother, but most importantly, she was our friend.
Her life will be celebrated with a Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1517 E. 33rd Avenue, on Saturday, August 9, at 11:00 am.
