Woman jailed for tossing toddler over fence

Spokane police arrested a 25-year-old woman for assaulting a child after she was seen allegedly tossing the 1-year-old boy over a fence and down an embankment Saturday.

Destiny L. Ahenakew is in the Spokane County Jail on a charge of first-degree assault.

A man working in a house in the 2400 block of West Mission Avenue called police about 2:30 p.m. after the woman, who had the boy with her, entered the home and approached him asking for water. After he gave her water and called police, he saw the woman throw the child over a fence. The little boy rolled down a 50-foot embankment and hit a tree, police said.

Another person picked up the child and brought him back up the embankment to safety. When officers arrived they called for medics. The injured child was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Ahenakew was arrested and booked into jail.
