Emmert says NCAA will appeal ruling
College athletics: NCAA president Mark Emmert said Sunday that college sports’ largest governing body will appeal Friday’s federal court decision that gives athletes a right to some of the millions of dollars they help generate.
U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled the NCAA must allow football players in FBS schools and Division I men’s basketball players at least $5,000 a year for rights to their names, images and likenesses, money that would be put in a trust fund and given to them when they leave school.
In his first public comments since the ruling, Emmert said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” that the NCAA would appeal “at least in part.”
Many legal experts expected the NCAA to appeal and say the case could wind up at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Marquez wins Indy Grand Prix
Motor racing: Spain’s Marc Marquez kept his perfect record intact by winning his 10th straight MotoGP race and becoming the first back-to-back Indianapolis Grand Prix winner.
Marquez beat Jorge Lorenzo of Spain by 1.803 seconds on Indy’s reconfigured 2.591-mile, 16-turn road course.
Radwanska, Tsonga take Rogers titles
Tennis: Agnieszka Radwanska beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 to win the Rogers Cup title in Montreal.
The third-seeded Radwanska, the first Rogers Cup champion from Poland, picked up her first tournament victory of the year.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the men’s championship in Toronto, beating second-seeded Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6 (3) for his fourth straight victory over a higher-seeded opponent.
The 13th-seeded Frenchman won his first ATP Tour title of the season and 11th overall.
Danielson repeats at Tour of Utah
Cycling: Tom Danielson successfully defended his Tour of Utah title, while former Tour de France champion Cadel Evans proved he’s rounding into form by winning his second consecutive stage.
Evans won a sprint out of a five-man breakaway ahead of Wilco Kelderman and Winner Anacona to capture the mountainous seventh stage.
Danielson followed a few seconds later, waving to the crowd in Park City, Utah, as the Garmin-Sharp rider celebrated his second overall win.
Lee outlasts Park to claim LPGA Classic
Golf: Mirim Lee won the Meijer LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory, beating fellow South Korean player Inbee Park with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff in Belmont, Michigan.
The long-hitting Lee drove into greenside bunker on the second extra hole – the short par-4 17th – and blasted out to 5 feet. After Park’s 15-foot birdie try lipped out, Lee holed her putt for the victory.
• Gillman rallies: Kristen Gillman came from behind to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur, beating Canada’s Brooke Mackenzie Henderson 2 up in the 36-hole final at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York.
