Thunderstorms may cool off hot Northwest

Associated Press
SEATTLE — Forecasters say near-record temperatures Monday in the Northwest will likely be followed by thunderstorms Tuesday that could spark more wildfires. The National Weather Service forecasts highs west of the Cascades in Washington and Oregon in the mid-90s. The record high for August 11 in Seattle is 95 set in 1977. Forecasters issued a heat advisory until 9 p.m. Monday for southwest Washington and northwest Oregon. Highs could reach 97 in Portland and 98 at Salem. Highs east of the Cascades could break 100. Forecasters say thunderstorms developing Monday night should cool things back to normal. They also bring the risk of lightning strikes that could start wildfires. A red flag warning for fire danger covers most of Oregon and southwest Washington and the east slopes of the Washington Cascades.
