School supply help available

School starts right around the corner and on Saturday at Unity in the Community in Riverfront Park, organizers expect to give away nearly 500 bags of school supplies to children in grades K-8.

To qualify for a bag of school supplies, children first participate in the multicultural event by visiting booths that represent different cultures.

Children must bring a parent or guardian to the event, and school supplies are only given to children present.

Other school-supply help is available through the following programs.

• The Salvation Army Backpacks For Kids event is Aug. 21 at the Salvation Army Community Center’s gymnasium, 222 E. Indiana Ave.

This year’s community partner is Cenex/Zip Trip, which has raised $37,980 toward school supplies for this event.

That means more than 5,000 backpacks full of supplies will be ready for children to pick up. Doors open at 9 a.m. and stay open through 6 p.m. or as long as supplies last.

Children must bring a parent or guardian to this event, along with photo ID and proof of address for the grown-up.

• The Salvation Army in Coeur d’Alene will have a similar giveaway at the Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, on Aug. 28 from 4 to 6 p.m.

• Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2607 S. Ray St., is collecting school supplies for the children at Liberty Park Child Care Center. The church is asking for donations of backpacks and any type of school supply, including crayons, washable markers, No. 2 pencils, liquid and stick glue, boxes of tissue, notebooks and tennis shoes for health and fitness classes. Specific lists of supplies are posted outside the church’s office. Call: (509) 534-0066.

• Mission Community Outreach Center, 1906 E. Mission Ave., is continuing its shoe drive through Saturday. The center’s goal is to collect 750 pairs of new shoes, which will be distributed at the center on Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Monetary donations toward the shoe drive can be made online at www.4mission.org. The center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Call: (509) 536-1084.
