In brief: Connor Halliday named to Manning Award Watch List

College football: Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday has been named to the 2014 Manning Award Watch List, announced by the Allstate Sugar Bowl Thursday.

Halliday is one of seven Pac-12 quarterbacks included on the list of 32.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

Halliday set the WSU school record with 4,597 passing yards last season.

EWU hall of famer Roffler dies

College basketball: EWU hall of famer Jack “Rabbit” Roffler, a standout on Eastern Washington basketball teams in the 1940s, died Wednesday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 89.

Roffler was inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011. Eastern’s 1945-46 team was inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, and Roffler gave the acceptance speech.

A 1946 graduate of Eastern, Roffler was a point guard during three of the most successful basketball seasons in school history. Eastern had a collective record of 79-16 (.832 winning percentage) in his three seasons, including two trips to the NAIA national tournament.
