NFL notes: Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe suspended for season opener

Associated Press

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was suspended for the season opener against Tennessee on Friday for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Bowe was pulled over for speeding in a Kansas City, Missouri, suburb on Nov. 10, and was arrested after police found a bag containing his wallet and two containers of suspected marijuana. He later pleaded guilty to amended charges of defective equipment and littering, and his attorney said there was no admission of guilt for the marijuana charge, which was dismissed.

Bowe, who signed a $56 million, five-year deal last offseason, issued a statement shortly after the suspension was announced.

“I made an error in judgment. I take responsibility for my mistake and it will not happen again,” he said. “I will be supporting my teammates in Week 1, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in Week 2.”

Browns hope to name starter

Browns coach Mike Pettine has set Tuesday as his target date. That’s when he’ll say whether Brian Hoyer or rookie Johnny Manziel is the starting quarterback for the opener.

Pettine said that Hoyer will start against the Washington Redskins on Monday night, with Manziel also getting snaps with the first-team offense. Pettine isn’t sure how he’ll divide their time and will see how the game unfolds. His focus is making sure the “reps are close to equal.”

Hoyer started Cleveland’s preseason opener at Detroit, with Manziel playing exclusively with the backups.

Bortles to work with starters

Rookie Blake Bortles will get his first opportunity with the first-team offense this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said that Bortles will get repetitions with the starters in practice and will play about a quarter with them during next week’s preseason game at Detroit.

Around the league

Bears TE Zach Miller has been placed on season-ending injured reserve because of a foot injury he suffered in Thursday’s preseason victory over the Jaguars. Miller left the game early and did not return. He tried to make the team as a third tight end behind starter Martellus Bennett and backup Dante Rosario. … EA Sports launched a Madden Season video featuring actor/comedian Kevin Hart and actor Dave Franco squaring off in Madden NFL 15. Making cameos are Von Miller – dancing, cowboy hat and all – and Richard Sherman in full pads tackling an unsuspecting Franco. LeSean McCoy, Dez Bryant, Colin Kaepernick and Eddie Lacy also join in.
