Obituary: Brown, Sally Ann (Bourbeau)
Age 85
She was 85 years old.
Sally was born on February 8, 1929, in Longview, Washington.
She was raised in Spokane where she was a graduate of North Central High School.
Sally excelled in academics, art and ballet.
Sally earned degrees in elementary education and art from Eastern Washington State (College) University, in Cheney, Washington.
She taught elementary school in Portland, Oregon and in 1969 she earned a Master’s Degree in deaf education from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, under the mentorship of Eloise Kennedy.
Sally was an itinerant teacher in the Portland Regional Program for the Deaf, and was the program’s supervisor at the time of her retirement in 1989.
She was extremely active during her lifetime.
Sally was a member of the Portland Mazamas and was able to successfully summit ten of the major Cascade peaks.
She traveled extensively after her retirement from the Galapagos Islands to Scandinavia, from the Great China Wall to Virginia, where she took summer courses in the life and times of Thomas Jefferson who she greatly admired.
Sally is survived by her daughter, Paula Shifley; her son, Mark Thomas; son-in-law, John Shifley; and granddaughters, Laura and Sarah Shifley.
She was preceded in death by her son, Matthew Thomas in 1973.
