In brief: Chiefs cut roster down for preseason, two 15-year-olds remain

Junior hockey: The Spokane Chiefs trimmed their preseason roster to 34 players, including four goaltenders, in preparation for Friday’s 3 p.m. preseason opener against Portland at Everett.

The Chiefs are also carrying 19 forwards and 11 defensemen. Two of the forwards are 15-year-olds selected in this year’s bantam draft: Jaret Anderson-Dolan (first round, 14th overall) and Hayden Ostir (second round, 36th overall).

Spokane will also play the host Silvertips (7 p.m. Saturday) and Seattle (3 p.m. Sunday) at the Everett Preseason Classic. The Chiefs’ lone home preseason game will be at 7:05 p.m. on Sept. 11 against Tri-City at EWU’s Recreation Center.

Motum earns contract with Utah Jazz

NBA: Former Washington State standout Brock Motum has signed with the Utah Jazz as a free agent. Financial terms were not released.

The 6-foot-10 Motum spent the 2013-14 season with Granarolo Bologna of the Italian Serie A, averaging 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.  He played in the 2014 Summer League with the Jazz, where he averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Motum, who played at WSU from 2009-2013, ranks fifth on the Cougars all-time list in both career points (1,530) and field goal percentage (.567). A native of Melbourne, Australia, he is currently playing for the Australian National Team, which starts the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain on Saturday.
