Chiefs get off to slow start in preseason with loss to Portland
EVERETT, Wash. – The Portland Winterhawks outshot the Spokane Chiefs 15-3 in the first period en route to an early three-goal lead and cruised to a 7-5 win on Friday.
The game marked each team’s first preseason.
Chiefs rookie defenseman Tyson Helgesen scored Spokane’s first goal of the preseason, a power play goal, on a feed from 20-year-old Liam Stewart to bring the score to 3-1. Portland scored the next three goals.

The Chiefs announced that 16-year-old goaltender Matt Berlin and forward Ezra Hall, 18, have been reassigned to their home clubs. Berlin returns to SSAC Athletics Midget AAA of the AMHL. Hall returns to the MJHL Winnipeg Blues.
