Huckleberries: Only ‘right’ legislative examples need apply

You might be hot and bothered regarding recent dog shootings by police officers in Coeur d’Alene and Spokane Valley. But the Kootenai County GOP isn’t. The local Elephants shot down a resolution offered by Precinct 52 Committeeman Bjorn Handeen, to better protect our four-legged BFFs. Bjorn recommended a law patterned after one in Colorado. During the lopsided debate against the resolution at the Central Committee on Tuesday, one detractor harrumphed – and I paraphrase – couldn’t you find a better example of a state law than one from (liberal) Colorado? Do you suppose Coloradans feel the same way about uberconservative Idaho?

Speaking of dogs

Signs of the times: “Can you reach the fence in 2 seconds? These two can” (with silhouette of two guard dogs on gate on Coeur d’Alene’s Second Street). And: “If you want to know if there’s life after death, jump this fence, and you’ll find out” (with silhouette of a guard dog, on West Lakeshore Drive in Coeur d’Alene’s historic Fortground area … . Huckleberries Online blog poll: 77 percent of my blog readers disagree with those overheated individuals who use the term “murder” to describe the controversial shooting of a 2-year-old black Lab, named Arfee, by a Coeur d’Alene police officer this summer.

Shut up! He explained

Brent Regan, a former Coeur d’Alene school trustee, is known for his pointed online commentary, especially on the Coeur d’Alene Press site. Here’s a recent example of his prose, under a post about stalled Coeur d’Alene teacher talks: “The vast majority of this community of anonymous, cowardly, lying trolls don’t like it when I point out facts!?!?!? Now I am ‘shocked.’ Whatever happened to tolerance of diversity? Respect for opposing views? HHMMMMmmmm?” And some of you were wondering why he is an ex-trustee?

Huckleberries

Poet’s Corner redux: “Noble legume, small and classy,/full of protein, although gassy;/a boon for farms from Sprague to Lind –/when I attend I stay upwind” – The Bard of Sherman Avenue (“National Lentil Festival in Pullman”) … TeeHee-Shirt … “If you can read this, please turn my 4-by-4 over” – on a middle-aged man at Sherman Park Square concert in downtown Coeur d’Alene Tuesday evening. The lettering was upside down on the back of a brown T-shirt … You’re headed for the crossbar hotel if a Post Falls police officer sees you speeding on a rim sans tire. A suspected DUI driver was sent directly to jail without passing go or receiving $200 when he was nabbed doing just that Thursday night … Point of order: Idaho gave women the right to vote in 1896, 24 years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Now, WalletHub ranks Idaho 48th on 2014 Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality. Washington is 27th. You’ve fallen a long way, baby … A mother’s lament: I just got one kid out of braces. Another is getting them on right now – tweets KXLY’s Robyn Nance, complete with a frowny-face symbol … In Sandpoint, “Bashful Dan” Young Facebooks: “I also have to make a decision about growing a beard again this fall-winter. I’m leaning toward maybe.”

Parting shot

In “Add Insult to Injury” Dept., a Huckleberries Online blog ( www.spokesman.com/blogs/hbo) reader found the following message on notebook paper in a plastic bag attached to a tree on Coeur d’Alene’s Tubbs Hill. It was addressed to “Whom It May Concern” And I quote: “I took your sweet bike … it’s mine now. Nice bike. Lock, too. Too bad wood isn’t as strong as steel. Shouldve (sic) left it on the lower & stronger branch.” Smug Bike Thief signed the note with a “666” and some symbols. No budding Fulbright Scholar there.
