Obituary: Lauby, Gary James Ph.D.

Age 73

LAUBY, Gary James, Ph.D. Gary Lauby died peace- fully at his home in Renton, WA on Thursday, August 7, 2014, after battling lung cancer and suffering a stroke.

The vigil will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014, 7:00 pm with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2014, 10:00 AM, both at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Ave, Spokane, WA, followed by a reception.

Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N. Wall St, Spokane, WA in the Garden of St. Francis.

Gary was the first of three children born to Joseph and Ann (Schanz) Lauby on July 18, 1941 in Nezperce, Idaho.

He attended elementary school and high school in Nezperce where he was active in football, baseball, and basketball.

His academic accomplishments included: B.A., Seattle University, Seattle, WA (1964), M.A., Seattle University (1965), and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Portland, OR (1968).

He met Patricia Gaffney at Seattle University and they were later married.

Born to that union were Jeffrey “Scott” and twins, Kristen and Kimberly.

Gary and Pat were later divorced.

Gary’s clinical employment as a psychologist included: Stockton State Hospital, Stockton, CA (1965-69); San Joaquin County Mental Health Services, French Camp, CA, (1969-70); Eastern State Hospital, Medical Lake, WA (1970-71); Brooklyn VA Hospital, Brooklyn, NY (1972-73); Region II Mental Health Services, Lewiston, ID (1973-75); Washington Corrections Center, Shelton, WA (1989-94); Airway Heights Corrections Center, Airway Heights, WA (1994-99).

His academic employment included: Assistant Professor of Psychology at University of Pacific in Stockton, CA (part time) - 1967-68, and Lecturer (weekends and evening classes), University of California at Davis, California - 1968-69.

He had private practices in Medical Lake, WA (1971-72); Lewiston, Idaho (1975-87); Vancouver, WA (1987-89); and Spokane, WA (1999-2008).

While working in Lewiston, Idaho he met and married the love of his life, Karen (Jacobs) in 1974.

Two children were born to that union, Maria (Lauby) Palmer and Daniel Lauby.

Gary looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren and enjoyed reading, listening to music, and spending time with his wife.

He was a very bright, loving, kind, and understanding husband, father, grandfather, and sibling.

He also had a wonderful sense of humor.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his daughter, Kimberly.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Scott (Susan) Lauby; Kristen (Kelly) Harrington and their daughters, Sammy and Megan; Maria (Marcus) Palmer and their children, John, Daniel, and Natasha; and Dan (Marilee) Lauby and their son, Trent; his brother, Bill (Ava) Lauby and sister, Marilyn Lauby.

Gary and Karen enjoyed a wonderful 40th wedding anniversary celebration with their beloved children and grandchildren over the 4th of July holiday.
