University of New Mexico’s The Pit now WisePies Arena

The Pit, one of college basketball’s most famous buildings, is getting a new name. A restaurant chain in Albuquerque, New Mexico, WisePies Pizza & Salad, donated $5 million to the University of New Mexico, securing the naming rights for 10 years. It will be called WisePies Arena and its logos will appear inside and outside the arena and on tickets. The largest cash gift to the athletic department will be used to pay off $60 million in renovations. Naming rights generate big revenue for colleges, but changing the name of the 48-year-old arena spurred a steady stream of profanities and disbelief on social media Monday. – AP
