UPDATE: The road has reopened, according to the Washington State Patrol

Original story

A fatal head-on collision between a tanker truck and passenger car Thursday morning closed U.S. Highway 395 about 10 miles south of Chewelah. Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Randy Elkins said the driver of the passenger car was killed at the scene. The car had no other passengers. The collision occurred around 11:20 a.m. near milepost 198, near Jump-Off Joe. Elkins said he believed the 9800-gallon tanker was carrying diesel. It was not leaking following the collision. WSP troopers are on scene and diverting traffic off the highway.
