Fixed NASCAR driver Tony Stewart underwent a fourth surgery on the leg he broke last year during a sprint car race in Iowa. Stewart broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg during the Aug. 5, 2013, crash and underwent two surgeries immediately after the accident, including one to insert a metal rod inside the tibia.

Died The football coach who helped build the University of North Dakota into a Division II power, Marvin “Whitey” Helling, has died. He was 91. Helling was the school’s head coach for 11 years, from 1957 to 1967, and had a record of 60-35-3. He guided his teams to three North Central Conference titles and pair of Division II bowl game victories.

Announced D.C. United’s Bill Hamid is Major League Soccer’s Goalkeeper of the Year. Hamid set career highs with 10 shutouts and 110 saves during the regular season as United went from the league’s worst record to the top spot in the Eastern Conference. MLS also announced that Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Pedro Morales won Newcomer of the Year.

Signed The New York Red Bulls signed forward Bradley Wright-Phillips as a designated player for the 2015 season. Wright-Phillips matched the MLS’ single-season scoring record of Roy Lassiter and Chris Wondolowski with 27 goals.

Broken Spanish swimmer Mireya Belmonte Garcia won the women’s 200-meter butterfly in record time on the opening night of the world short-course championships at Doha, Qatar. Garcia finished in 1 minute, 59.61 seconds, eclipsing the record of 2:00.78 set by Zhige Liu of China in 2009.

Changed Formula One is scrapping its rule to award double points to the winner of the final race of the season. The decision was ratified at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, when South Korea was provisionally added to a 21-race calendar for the 2015 season. F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone introduced double points for the season-ending race to attract big TV audiences.
