Letters to the sports editor

Why, oh why, is Leach still the coach?

Am I the only one who fails to see why Mike Leach is still the football coach at WSU?  Other than the fact that WSU would have to pay him a boatload of money if they fire him, why is he still there?

In three years, he has the third-worst record of the last 10 coaches (who coached at least three seasons).  He lost last year’s bowl game through poor clock management. His failure to kick field goals on fourth down has cost at least two games (and likely more).

For this he was given a contract extension, and a $500,000 raise, making him one of the top paid coaches in the Pac-12 ($2.75 million per year)? His passing philosophy has garnered records but few wins.

Let him go and find someone who knows how to play the game to win.

Finally, Heisman goes to player with class

I was worried before last week’s Heisman Trophy presentation. After the past few winners … Reggie Bush (I am well-paid by USC), Scam Newton (give my father $180,000 and I’ll play for you), Johnny Manziel (show me the money and I’ll start signing), Jameis Winston (crab breath, or how I  signed 4,000 articles just for fun), I feared the Heisman voters would select another embarrassing doofus to further taint the award.

Finally, with the award going to Marcus Mariota, it appears the Heisman voters have at last picked someone with class.

I am not a big Oregon fan, or even a Duck Dynasty fan,  but I am happy for the team, the school, and Marcus. Go Ducks! … Unless they play Alabama.
