In brief: 7-year-old boy dies after Coeur d’Alene pool accident

From Staff Reports

A 7-year-old boy pulled from a Coeur d’Alene hotel swimming pool Friday has died.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department was notified early Sunday morning that the child died shortly after being removed from life support. The boy’s name has not been released.

“On behalf of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department I’d like to offer my deepest sympathy to the family after this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” police Chief Lee White said in a statement.

Emergency crews were called Friday to the SpringHill Suites, 2250 Seltice Way, where the boy was swimming with his 12-year-old brother, police said.

The child had been diving in the deep end and swimming to the bottom, but at one point did not surface.

The boys’ father, who had been in the nearby hot tub, and another hotel guest performed CPR until emergency crews arrived, police said.

The boy was flown to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane on Friday night. The boy’s family is from Missoula.

Ione driver dies in off-road crash

An Ione, Washington, man died Saturday in a car accident on Cedar Creek Road about 2 miles northwest of the Pend Oreille County town. Gregory D. Keithley, 55, died at the scene, the Washington State Patrol said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Keithley was driving a 1995 Honda Passport off-road in a meadow on the east side of the road. The vehicle crossed to the west side of the road and went down an embankment about 30 feet, coming to rest on its side, police said.

Two passengers from Ione were injured. Lisa A. Herron, 21, was taken to Newport Community Hospital. Jeremy A. Fraley, 34, was not taken to the hospital.

The accident is under investigation, and drugs or alcohol were involved, investigators said.

The mountain will open with limited terrain and run chairs 1 and 5, with the possibility of more terrain and lifts opening throughout the day.

“The weather over the last few days has given us a lot of dense, wet snow, perfect for base building,” marketing director Alexis Hartmann said Sunday. “These are early season conditions, and skiers and riders are advised to bring the appropriate equipment.”
