Post Falls’ DOMA a finalist

A boutique coffee roaster in Post Falls has been nominated for a Good Food Award for the second year in a row.

DOMA Coffee is a finalist in the 2015 competition. Winners will be announced in early January.

DOMA is one of more than 200 finalists in 11 categories recognized for being “tasty, authentic and responsible.”

There were 1,462 entries this year – the fifth for the awards. DOMA is the only coffee finalist from Idaho. It was chosen for its Ethiopia Suke Quto coffee.

The awards are sponsored by Seedling Projects of San Francisco, a public benefit corporation dedicated to supporting the sustainable food movement.

Spokane’s Roast House was a winner last year.

Ham for the holidays

Rosauers Supermarkets and the John Morrell Food Group recently donated more than 2,700 servings of ham to Spokane’s Catholic Charities’ Food For All.

The program uses community-based strategies to fight hunger in Eastern Washington. It also partners with No Kid Hungry, a campaign of Share Our Strength. The national organization works to end childhood hunger in America.

In Washington state, No Kid Hungry supports access to free meals in summer and, through Catholic Charities’ Food For All, helps families prepare healthy and affordable meals.

Chocolaty snack

Reader Mike Storms, of Spokane, swears by a chocolaty snack he discovered by accident and wants to share.

The 70-year-old retired electrical engineer found, as an empty-nester, he needs recipes for one or two servings, like individual-sized yogurt containers.

“By accident, buying plain yogurt instead of vanilla, I came up with a simple, small and quick pudding. It’s low fat and low calorie,” he wrote to The Spokesman-Review Food section.

Storms recommends Tillamook plain yogurt. Here are his instructions:

“Take 1 cup of plain yogurt, 1 teaspoon of cocoa, a dash of vanilla extract and two packs of Splenda. Mix until smooth, and you have 1 serving of chocolate pudding.  It can be scaled up. Adjust ingredients to taste.”

For example, honey or agave could also be used to sweeten the flavored yogurt concoction.
