Snow brings crashes, icy roads

Cars are sliding off roads and down hills today as the region deals with its first significant snow fall of the season. There was an inch of snow outside the National Weather Service office on the west plains at noon today, said meteorologist Steven Van Horn, and the snow will continue to fall through this evening. By the end of the day Spokane should have about three inches of snow while North Idaho could see up to six inches. Some areas of Idaho, including Lookout Pass and Fourth of July Pass, will see the snow continue into Sunday, Van Horn said. While Mother Nature failed to deliver a white Christmas, a white New Year’s seems to be a certainty. High temperatures on Sunday will be at or below freezing in most areas and extremely cold temperatures are projected to arrive Monday, Van Horn said. “It should be here for a while,” Van Horn said. The Spokane area will also see winds up to 25 miles per hour on Monday, making it feel below zero with the wind chill. Some areas of North Idaho could see higher winds.
