Obituary: Slater, Elsie (Stirn)

Age 90

SLATER, Elsie (Stirn) (Age 90) Elsie passed away peacefully Friday, December 26, 2014.

She was born on June 12, 1924 in Ilse, Colorado to Charles and Amelia Hutchins Stirn.

Shortly after her birth her parents moved to McGill, Nevada where Elsie later married Wallace (Wally) E. Slater on December 24 1939.

At the beginning of World War II Elsie and her husband moved to Vancouver, Washington where Wally was a painting superintendent at the Vancouver shipyards.

In 1946 they moved to Spokane, Washington where they started a painting business and raised their family.

Elsie was a loving and supportive mother and wife that found great pleasure in her family.

Besides her family, she had a passion for reading, travel, camping, picking huckleberries, and cooking.

She was a wonderful hostess entertaining countless friends and family at her home.

Her candy, camping, and family meal recipes have survived as family favorites.

Elsie was an avid hula dancer and was a member of the YWCA Hula Dance Club which performed at many local events.

She also enjoyed boating and was part of group of boating enthusiasts that started the “Buoys and Bells” boat club.

Elsie was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She served in the church youth programs for over twenty years and provided continuous service in other church organizations.

She and Wally also served a two year mission at the Seattle Temple.

Elsie is predeceased by her husband; parents; and brothers Charles, Jody, Sylvester (Bud), Keith; and sisters Edna Howes and Betty Green.

She is survived by her three sons Terry and wife, Mary, Rodney and wife, Joy, Kevin and wife, Jeanine.

She has fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane Washington North Stake Center, 401 W. Regina.

Viewing will be from 10:00 - 10:40am in the Relief Society room and Service will begin at 11:00am in the Chapel.
