In brief: CVSD accepting award nominations

SPOKANE VALLEY – The board of directors of Central Valley School District is now accepting nominations for its annual Meritorious Service Awards. Each year, the awards honor exemplary contributions toward student achievement in the district.

Anyone is encouraged to make a nomination in the following categories: certificated employee; classified employee; team; community member/organization.

Nomination forms are available at www.cvsd.org and must be submitted to a school principal by Feb. 12. Recipients will be announced March 24.

Zumba, dance classes offered

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Parks & Recreation will offer Zumba classes Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N. Discovery Place.

The class is open to anyone 16 or older and is $15 a month.

The department will also offer a Beginning Partner Dance class that will focus on the box-step essentials from the rumba, foxtrot and waltz.

If couples are taking the class to prepare for their wedding, students will also learn entrances and exits and may bring their wedding song to class.

The class, also for those 16 and older, will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and costs $35 for singles or $65 for couples.

Sessions for Zumba and partner dance will be offered from Feb. 5 through 26 and March 5 through 26.

Free tax prep help around the county

SPOKANE VALLEY – Free tax-preparation help is available in various locations throughout Spokane County starting today.

IRS-certified volunteers will help people who earn less than $51,567 a year prepare and e-file their 2013 tax returns. Tax-help sites will stay open through April 15.

The free tax help is a partnership of Spokane County United Way, AARP, the IRS and CASH, a local coalition to help low-income families save and invest.

The tax-prep site is at Spokane Valley Library, 12004 E. Main Ave. Clients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exception is Feb. 17, the President’s Day holiday, when the library is closed.
