In Brief: Bryan brothers keep U.S. alive in Davis Cup

Tennis: Bob and Mike Bryan beat Dominic Inglot and Colin Fleming 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 Saturday in San Diego to pull the United States to 2-1 against Britain in the first round of the Davis Cup.

The match will be decided today in reverse singles, when Wimbledon winner Andy Murray of Britain faces Sam Querrey and James Ward of Britain faces Donald Young. Murray won the opening singles match in straight sets against Donald Young on Friday while Ward rallied to beat Querrey in five sets.

• Sharapova falls in Paris: Top-seeded Maria Sharapova lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in an all-Russian semifinal of the Open GDF Suez in Paris.

Pavlyuchenkova will play third-seeded Sara Errani of Italy. Errani beat Alize Cornet of France 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (5).

Wondolowski guides U.S. past S. Korea

Soccer: In Carson, Calif., Chris Wondolowski scored two goals in the United States’ 2-0 men’s victory over South Korea in its first exhibition of the World Cup year.

Wondolowski headed home a rebound in the fourth minute and struck again on a short shot in the 60th minute.

Thompson nets pair as Lightning win in OT

NHL: Nate Thompson scored twice, including the winner at 4:36 of overtime, to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 win over the Canadiens in Montreal.

Ben Bishop stopped 28 shots for Tampa Bay, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

• Taransko leads Blues: Vladimir Tarasenko scored and added an assist in regulation, and then netted the deciding goal in the shootout to lead the Blues to a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators in St. Louis.

• Sharks slip past Blackhawks: Joe Thornton capped San Jose’s perfect shootout with a nifty move past Corey Crawford that helped the Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in San Jose, Calif.

Flames edge Wild in OT: Mikael Backlund scored two goals, including the winner 2:25 into overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild in Calgary, Alberta.

Thunder run into Wall; streak ends at 10

Basketball: John Wall scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and the Washington Wizards took advantage of a rare off-game from hometown star Kevin Durant in a 96-81 win over the visiting Thunder that stopped Oklahoma City’s 10-game winning streak.

Wall also had 15 assists.

Durant was held to 26 points on 8-for-21 shooting, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range, along with five turnovers.

• Heat end Knicks’ roll: LeBron James had 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and the Miami Heat avoided a winless season in the Big Apple with a 106-91 win that snapped the New York Knicks’ four-game winning streak.

• Pacers add Bynum: The Indiana Pacers signed free-agent center Andrew Bynum for the rest of the season.

Team officials did not release additional details of the contract. He is expected to join the team next week.

Bynum has played 24 games since the 2011-12 season ended.

• Finland earns spot at FIBA championship: Finland has received a wild card into the World Cup of Basketball, along with traditional contenders Brazil, Greece and Turkey.

FIBA, basketball’s governing body, announced the decisions to complete the 24-team field for this summer’s tournament in Spain.

Gallacher grabs 2-shot lead at Dubai

Golf: Defending champion Stephen Gallacher had seven birdies and an eagle on the back nine to surge past Rory McIlroy and take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Dubai (United Arab Emirate) Desert Classic.

Gallacher equaled the European Tour record for the lowest nine-hole score with an inward 28 for a 9-under 63. That gave him a 16-under total of 200, with McIlroy in second after 69. Tiger Woods is 11 shots back after a 70.

• Watson leads Phoenix Open: A desert critter saved leader Bubba Watson at least a stroke in the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Watson’s drive on the par-5 13th went into a bush and settled next to a burrowing animal hole that would have interfered with his swing. He got a free drop and saved par on the way to a 3-under 68 and a two-stroke lead at 15 under.

Phil Mickelson made a double bogey on the par-3 16th, closing with a 72 to drop to 3 under.

Fashion Plate claims Las Virgenes Stakes

Horse racing: Fashion Plate led all the way in winning the $300,000 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by a half-length at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Fashion Plate ran one mile in 1:37.22 and paid $11.40, $4.40 and $3.80 at 9-2 odds in the Grade 1 race.

• Wildcat Red romps to Hutcheson Stakes win: Wildcat Red took the lead coming out of the final turn and romped to a 4 3/4 length win over C. Zee in the $200,000 Hutcheson Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Wildcat Red won the Grade 2 seven-furlong race in 1:22.21, paying $6.00, $3.80 and $2.60.

Champ Barao needs one round for TKO

Miscellany: Renan Barao made quick work of Urijah Faber in his latest title defense, dropping the challenger via TKO at 3:22 in the first round to uphold his 135-pound championship in the main event of UFC 169 in Newark, N.J.

Jose Aldo retained his 145-pound championship via unanimous decision over Ricardo Lamas in the co-main event. Alistair Overeem beat Frank Mir by unanimous decision in a battle of former MMA heavyweight champions.

• Dibaba sets world indoor record: Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia set a women’s world indoor record in running 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 55.17 seconds at the Karlsruhe (Germany) indoor meet.

Dibaba, the world indoor champion, shaved more than 3 seconds off the previous record of 3:58.28 set by Russia’s Elena Soboleva in 2006 in Moscow.

• Dartmouth skier dies: Dartmouth College says that Torin Tucker, a member of its cross-country ski team, died at an event in Craftsbury, Vt.

Dartmouth spokesman Rick Bender says that Tucker, a junior from Sun Valley, Idaho, died at the scene after attempts to resuscitate him failed. The cause of his death is still under investigation.
