Fighting Irish rout Duke to stay unbeaten

Women’s basketball: Kayla McBride had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 2 Notre Dame remained unbeaten by routing No. 3 Duke 88-67 on Sunday in Durham, N.C., the Blue Devils’ first ACC loss at home since 2008.

Jewell Loyd scored 17 points and Lindsay Allen and Natalie Achonwa had 15 apiece for the Fighting Irish (21-0, 8-0), who made it look easy in their first visit to Cameron Indoor Stadium as ACC members.

They never trailed, shot nearly 62 percent, and held Duke to 39 percent shooting and turned the realigned conference’s anticipated game of the year into yet another blowout.

They claimed sole possession of first place by bringing a decisive end to the Blue Devils’ 42-game winning streak in home conference games.

Tricia Liston scored 23 points and single-handedly prevented Duke (21-2, 8-1) from being blown out by halftime.

Hurricanes upset Heels: Adrienne Motley scored a career-high 27 points as Miami upset No. 6 North Carolina 83-80 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Keyona Hayes added 14 points, including a crucial second-chance layup with a minute to go, for the Hurricanes (12-10, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Xylina McDaniel and Diamond DeShields had 18 points each for the Tar Heels (17-5, 5-3).

Cardinal win 20th straight: Chiney Ogwumike had 29 points, eight rebounds and four assists and No. 4 Stanford ran its winning streak to 20 games by beating 21st-ranked California 79-64 in Berkeley, Calif., in the second meeting between the rivals in a four-day span.

Amber Orrange added 13 points for the Cardinal (21-1, 10-0 Pac-12). Brittany Boyd had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for California (14-7, 6-4).

Ferrell’s 27 propels Indiana past Michigan

Men’s basketball: Yogi Ferrell scored 27 points, hitting seven 3-pointers in eight tries, to lead unranked Indiana to a 63-52 upset of No. 10 Michigan in Bloomington, Ind.

Indiana (14-8, 4-5 Big Ten) had lost three of four but led most of the way in improving to 12-2 at Assembly Hall. Noah Vonleh added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Hoosiers, who shot 54 percent to the Wolverines’ 40 percent.

Michigan (16-5, 8-1) produced a season-low point total as a 10-game winning streak came to an end. Derrick Walton Jr. scored 13 points and Caris LeVert had 12. They were the only Wolverines in double figures, as leading scorer Nik Stauskas was held to six points.

Brogdon’s 3 lifts Cavaliers: Malcolm Brogdon made a last-second 3-pointer to give visiting Virginia a 48-45 victory against No. 18 Pittsburgh.

Brogdon finished 16 points for Virginia (17-5, 8-1), which maintained sole possession of second place in the ACC. The Cavaliers have won five consecutive games since losing at Duke on Jan. 13.

Pitt (18-4, 6-3) lost consecutive games for the first time this season. The Panthers have lost three of their past five after opening with a 16 wins in their first 17 games.

Ovechkin’s OT tally lifts Caps past Wings

NHL: Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 39th goal on a power play 2:37 into overtime, and the Washington Capitals beat the visiting Detroit Red Wings 6-5 to earn a split of a home-and-home set and tighten up things in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference.

Joel Ward had two goals and an assist, and Jason Chimera, John Carlson and Troy Brouwer also scored for the Capitals, who got a touchdown’s worth of goals in their fifth consecutive Super Bowl Sunday home matinee. Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves.

Gustav Nyquist had his first career hat trick and added an assist, and Tomas Tatar and Justin Abdelkader also scored for the Red Wings.

Jets edge Habs: Michael Frolik scored in the third period to give visiting Winnipeg a 2-1 victory over Montreal.

Tobias Enstrom also scored for the Jets and Al Montoya stopped 30 shots. Brian Gionta scored for the Canadiens. Carey Price, playing his second game in as many days, made 33 saves.

The Jets have won eight of 10 since Paul Maurice took over as head coach on Jan. 12.

Rondo helps Celtics stop four-game skid

NBA: Rajon Rondo had season highs with 19 points and 10 assists and the Boston Celtics snapped a four-game losing streak with a 96-89 win over the visiting Orlando Magic.

Jared Sullinger scored seven of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Celtics, who let a 12-point lead slip to one in the final period before pulling away at the end.

Brandon Bass had 19 points and nine rebounds and Avery Bradley scored 17 in his return after missing five games with a sprained ankle.

Arron Afflalo had 18 points and Nikola Vucevic finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who lost their 11th straight road game. Glen Davis had 15 points, Tobias Harris scored 13 and Victor Oladipo had 12 points as all five Orlando starters scored in double figures.

Ligety takes final race before Olympics

Winter sports: Ted Ligety of the United States put together two nearly flawless runs to win a World Cup giant slalom in St. Moritz, Switzerland, the last men’s race before the Sochi Olympics.

Ligety, a two-time world champion in the event, was a massive 1.51 seconds faster than Marcel Hirscher of Austria in the combined time.

Hirscher jumped from third to second, while Alexis Pinturault of France fell from second to third after both heats to finish 1.69 seconds behind Ligety. Hirscher still retained his lead in the giant slalom standings.

Hansdotter earns first victory: Frida Hansdotter of Sweden won her first women’s World Cup race in heavy snow after American teen Mikaela Shiffrin failed to hold on to her opening-run lead in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

It was the final women’s World Cup race before the Sochi Olympics.
