Vetter to start in goal for U.S.

Jesse Vetter will start in goal for the U.S. women’s hockey team when it opens the Olympics against Finland today in Sochi, Russia.

U.S. coach Katey Stone made the announcement after the team’s final practice before the Sochi Games begin.

Vetter was a three-time NCAA champion at Wisconsin and the winner of the 2009 Patty Kazmaier Award, given to the top player in women’s college hockey. She went 3-1 with the U.S. Olympic team that won a silver medal in Vancouver in 2010.

Suter leads women’s downhill

Fabienne Suter of Switzerland led the second women’s downhill training session in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia.

Suter clocked 1 minute, 42.70 seconds. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was second, 0.11 behind, and Anna Fenninger of Austria was third, 0.23 behind, although she missed some gates.

Nyman earns U.S. downhill final spot

Austria and the United States completed their squads for the Olympic men’s downhill.

Steven Nyman earned the fourth and final U.S. spot, edging out Erik Fisher and Jared Goldberg with a solid training run. He joins Travis Ganong, Marco Sullivan and Bode Miller.

The Austrians will go with Matthias Mayer, Max Franz, Georg Streitberger and Klaus Kroell for Sunday’s race. Mayer was the fastest through the tricky course during training.

U.S. coach Sasha Rearick said he used the second training session as a “one-run shootout,” with Nyman tied for 18th. Fisher and Goldberg were several spots back.

Stoch rises to top in ski jumping

Polish World Cup leader Kamil Stoch showed why he’s a strong gold medal favorite for the first ski jumping final at Sochi.

Under bright blue, sunny skies at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center, Stoch had two firsts and a second-place finish in three training runs for Sunday night’s individual normal hill final.

Gregor Schlierenzaur of Austria was second in the third training jump while defending double gold medalist Simon Amman was tied for sixth.

Qualifying will be today.

Chinese official named IOC VP

China’s senior Olympic official, Yu Zaiqing, has been elected a vice president of the IOC.

The 62-year-old Yu, a member of the IOC since 2000, ran unopposed for the vacant VP position on the International Olympic Committee.

Biathlon course requires extension

Course workers have added 130 feet to the biathlon track in Krasnaya Polyana for the Sochi Olympics because it was too short. The loop should measure 1.6 miles.

Injury report

American Heidi Kloser pulled out of the Olympics after injuring her right leg during a training run before moguls qualifying. Kloser tore knee ligaments and broke her femur following a crash Thursday night. … U.S. freestyle skier Maggie Voisin, the youngest member of Team USA, is out of the Olympics due to an ankle injury. The 15-year-old from Whitefish, Mont., injured her right ankle during training for ski slopestyle and doctors deemed she couldn’t recover in time for competition Tuesday.
