Boys basketball: Vikings claim league title

Austin Paulsen made a free throw with 8 seconds remaining and Coeur d’Alene secured the Inland Empire League 5A title with a 49-48 win over Post Falls Saturday night in Coeur d’Alene.

The Trojans’ last-second shot was off the mark.

Devin Kluss scored 14 points and Tony Naccarato added 13 points for Coeur d’Alene (14-3, 5-1).

The Trojans (11-7, 2-3) were led by Nick Hall’s 19 points.

Coeur d’Alene jumped head 14-6 after the first quarter and did just enough to hold off Post Falls’ rally.

Lake City 75, Lewiston 36: Justin Pratt made 9 of 11 shots, including all four of his 3-pointers, and scored 22 points as the Timberwolves (13-5, 4-2) dominated in the first half and eased past the Bengals (5-14, 0-5) in Coeur d’Alene. Jacob Dahl added 11 points and Tucker Louie-McGee had seven assists for the T-wolves, who outscored Lewiston 22-4 in the first quarter and led 51-11 at the half. The Bengals’ Jayden Kauffman tallied a team-high 14 points.

District 7 2B

St. George’s 58, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 45: Erik Muelheims scored 22 points and Dexter Sienko added 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Dragons (23-0) secured the top seed to subregionals with a win over the Broncos (19-3) in the district title game at Mt. Spokane. Will Tender chipped in 11 points for St. George’s, which outscored LRS 17-9 in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead into the fourth. Cort Ruzicka led the Broncos with 12 points.

Liberty 50, Northwest Christian 44: Match Burnham made 6 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds as the Lancers (19-5) claimed the third seed to subregionals with a win over the Crusaders (14-10) at Mt. Spokane. Ryan Thayer added 12 points for Liberty. Northwest Christian’s Chris Hartis had a team-high 18 points. The Crusaders are the fourth seed heading into subregionals.

Colfax 52, Davenport 43: Kasey Johnson scored 19 points and the Bulldogs (10-14) made 19 of 23 free throws and beat the Gorillas (7-17) to secure the fifth and final seed to the subregional tournament. Austin Zellar and Wyatt Evers scored 10 points apiece for Davenport, but the Gorillas couldn’t respond after scoring just nine first-half points. Davenport’s season has concluded.

Inland Empire 4A

Moscow 79, Sandpoint 70: Nick Ellison scored 32 points and Jack Akey added 13 as the Bears (7-9, 4-0) clipped the host Bulldogs (8-9, 0-3). Moscow held off a potential Sandpoint rally by making 19 its 22 free-throw attempts. The Bulldogs’ Jeremiah Gagnon drained five 3-pointers and finished with 29 points.

Great Northern

Pullman 52, Colville 38: Race Martin scored 24 points, David Ungerer added 15 and the Greyhounds (16-2, 10-1) secured at least a share of the league title with a win over the host Indians (9-9, 4-7). Pullman outscored Colville 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 19-point lead into the fourth. Matt Hubbard tallied a team-high 16 points for the Indians. Pullman can win the league title outright with a win Tuesday at home against East Valley.

Southeast 1B

Pomeroy 62, Colton 50: Cody LaMunyan scored 25 points and the Pirates (18-2, 14-2) pulled away late and beat the Wildcats (10-5, 9-5) in a back-and-forth game in Pomeroy. The Pirates led by 11 at the half, but Colton cut the lead to three with an 18-10 third-quarter run. Pomeroy put the game away in the fourth, outscoring the Wildcats 23-14. Colton’s Jake Straughan tallied a team-high 17 points.

Rosalia 75, Tekoa-Oakesdale 56: Craig Nelson scored 32 points and the Spartans (10-9, 8-7) dominated through the first three quarters before letting up in the fourth in an easy win over the visiting Nighthawks (1-15, 1-13). Ryan Maley added 14 points and Clay Shelton chipped in 11 for Rosalia, which held a 67-41 lead heading into the fourth. Tekoa-Oakesdale’s Tyler Hanson scored 22 points.

LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 87, St. John-Endicott 42: Darcy Stamper erupted for 41 points and the Tigercats (8-8, 7-7) dumped the Eagles (1-18, 1-14) in LaCrosse. Riley Roberts added 18 points and Joe Guske chipped in 11 for LWK. St. John-Endicott’s Robert Staples tallied a team-high 17 points.

Nonleague

Orofino 47, Lakeside (Idaho) 36: Kalob Turner scored 18 points and the Maniacs beat the visiting Knights. Lakeside’s Joe Brown tallied a team-high 14 points.
