Dinner will celebrate animals, benefit Partners for Pets
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate those we love – even the furry ones.
“The true love of your life is your cat or dog,” Sue Mathis said while talking about Woof, Purr and Wine, a fundraiser for Partners for Pets. “We welcome all groups of friends that feel that way.”
Woof, Purr and Wine is themed around sharing stories about the unconditional love of an animal. The event will be 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Nectar Tasting Room, 120 N. Stevens St. in Spokane.
“We’re asking people to bring a picture of their favorite furry buddy,” Mathis said. “You’ll get to talk about all their crazy antics.”
Partners for Pets is a nonprofit organization based in Spokane Valley dedicated to rescuing cats and dogs from being euthanized at area shelters. Mathis said 86 cents of every dollar donated to the organization goes toward the rescue and care of animals.
“The money from this event will go into our vet bill fund,” Mathis said. “On average, we can spend $2,000 a month for veterinarian care.”
The evening includes a light three-course meal served with two glasses of wine.
The meal will be served buffet style with a choice of appetizers such as a large tiger shrimp on seasoned flatbread or stuffed portabella mushroom. The main course is a gourmet salad with a choice of toppings including turkey meatballs, nuts and cheeses.
For dessert guests choose between two delicacies: a three-berry tart in a phyllo shell or a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese center.
All entrees are prepared by Mathis and a team of volunteers. The wine will be chosen by Nectar staff to complement the food.
As part of its fundraising evening, Partners for Pets will be selling balloons with a red sealed envelope for $20.
Each envelope contains a gift certificate to an area business donated by one of more than 50 vendors. Prizes include a gift certificate for an overnight stay at the Davenport Hotel, dinner for two at Ferraro’s Family Italian Restaurant or a $50 gift certificate to Milford’s Fish House Restaurant.
A table will be set up inviting participants to sponsor a cat in the adoption center for $15 a month. The proceeds of the sponsorship program go to the general operating costs of the adoption facility.
Partners for Pets was founded in 1996 and rescues an average of 300 to 350 animals every year. The shelter works to match the pet to the new owner. However, if the pet adoption doesn’t work out for the owner, Partners for Pets will take its animals back throughout the lifetime of the pet.
“We have a goal of rescuing as many cats and dogs as we can,” Mathis said. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”
The organization also supports sterilization surgeries for cats and dogs and works to educate the community about sterilization, permanent identification and making a lifetime commitment.
