Seahawks add Van Roten

Adding depth at a position group that could undergo significant change in the offseason, the Seahawks signed free-agent guard/center Greg Van Roten on Friday.

Van Roten, who played at Penn, spent the past two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, who signed him in 2012 as an undrafted free agent.

He played in seven games for the Packers during the 2012 regular season as well as both playoff games. He only played three games in 2013 before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

He was cut by Green Bay this week, but his agent, Bill Baldini, told ESPN it was not related to the injury and that Van Roten’s foot “is fine.’’

Seattle signed the 6-foot-3, 303-pound Van Roten to a one-year contract. He will compete for a spot on a line that could look different when the Seahawks take the field for offseason workouts beginning in May.

Starting right tackle Breno Giacomini and veteran guard/tackle Paul McQuistan will each become unrestricted free agents in March, and backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre will be a restricted free agent.
