Obituary: Haugen, Galen Nels

Age 96

HAUGEN, Galen Nels Galen Nels Haugen, age 96, died on February 10, 2014, following a sudden illness.

He was surrounded by his family.

He was born September 22, 1917 in Pekin, North Dakota.

Galen graduated from Tower High School in 1935.

Galen married Vera Sutton, on July 7, 1940 in Malta, Montana, where their first two children, Leilia and Barbara, were born.

Their son, Bob, was born several years later in Spokane, Washington.

In 1947 they moved to Richland, Washington, where they settled and raised their family.

Providing for his family was always foremost in Galen’s life.

He was a master of all trades and there was absolutely nothing he could not do.

His talents were admired and respected by all who knew him.

Galen loved golfing and fishing and will always be remembered for his love of family.

A chocolate bar a day (or two) will always make the family chuckle when they think of him!

Galen worked for 34 years at Hanford as a Power Engineer.

In 1982 when he retired, he and Vera spent many years traveling to Palm Springs and Reno with long time Richland friends.

They also enjoyed many cruises and their visits with children and grandchildren.

Galen is survived by his daughter, Leilia Pierce and husband Jack; his daughter, Barbara Jetton; and his son, Bob Haugen and wife Glenda.

He is grandfather to: Joni, David, Nancy, Galen, Kacey, Jon, Holly, Tami, Wendy and Robert.

He is blessed with 23 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Galen’s wife of 62 years, Vera; mother and father, Lillie and Bernard Haugen; brother, Vernon Haugen; and sister, Hazel Isom preceded him in death.

There will be a public viewing on February 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at Memories at Sunset Event Center in Richland, Washington and a funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m.

Suggestions for memorials are Hospice and the non-profit Cheney Assisted Living Center, which was Galen’s home for the past nine years.
