University, Shadle win, advance

The Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference split four opening loser-out basketball games as the top seeds had little difficulty advancing.

University opened a 22-12 lead in the first half to hold off the visiting Kennewick Lions 43-38.

The Titans (8-13) play host to Kamiakin (15-6) on Friday as part of a doubleheader with the Titan boys. The girls tip off at 6.

Kaitlin Pannell led U-Hi with 16 points and five assists.

Kamiakin 52, Mt. Spokane 43: The Braves used a 10-2 run to pull away from the visiting Wildcats (7-14) late. Dallas Flager led Mt. Spokane with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Holly Ellison led Kamiakin with 12 points.

Shadle Park 69, Hanford 55: Shyla Carr led four Highlanders in double figures with 15 points as Shadle opened a big first-half lead and was never threatened. Shadle (8-13) travels to Sunnyside (16-3) on Friday. Tipoff is at 8. Balancing Shadle’s effort were Shalise Hicks (11 points), Abby Bauernfeind (11) and Rashae Williams (10).

Sunnyside 70, North Central 43: The Grizzlies cruised to a 31-12 lead by halftime against the outmatched Indians (2-19). Megan Murphy led NC with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tiana Perez led Sunnyside with 17 points.
