Area roundup: Whitworth’s Shea sets another weight-throw record

Whitworth senior Keegan Shea took first place in the men’s weight throw Friday at the Washington State University Open II in Pullman.

Keegan’s toss of 57 feet, 7 inches broke a school record he set at the Vandal Indoor Invite on Feb. 7.

Idaho’s Kyle Rothwell took second place and WSU’s Travis Pickett was third.

The meet continues today.

Baseball

Gonzaga’s two-out rally in the top of the ninth inning came up just short and the Bulldogs fell to Notre Dame (2-3) 3-2 at the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio.

In the ninth, GU’s Caleb Wood and Mitchell Gunsolus hit RBI singles before Cory LeBrun grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Bulldogs starter Brandon Bailey went the distance, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking four.

Gonzaga (2-4) will play Santa Clara at the tournament this morning.

• Jeremy Null pitched seven innings of one-run ball and Jacob Hoyle had five RBIs as Western Carolina (3-2) routed Washington State (1-2) 13-1 in a nonconference game in Pullman.

The Cougars’ lone run came in the seventh on Ian Sagdal’s RBI single. Null allowed five hits and a run while striking out six.

The second game of the four-game series will be played at 2 p.m. today.

• College of Idaho jumped ahead early and held on late to defeat Whitworth 6-5 in a nonconference game at Wolfe Field in Caldwell, Idaho.

Three doubles led to a three-run first inning for the Coyotes (5-4). They extended the lead to 5-0 in the fifth.

The Pirates (2-3) rallied in the eighth, scoring four runs, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Josh Davis led Whitworth at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.

The teams will play a doubleheader today.

Golf

The third and final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Waihua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii, was canceled because of inclement weather.

Washington State’s men finished in seventh place at 3-over-par 291. Second-ranked California won the event for the fourth straight year.

Junior hockey

Riley Brandt, Kyle Hope and Jacob Boyczuk scored as the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (38-10-1-2) beat the Spokane Braves 3-1 in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane.

It was the final regular-season game for the Braves (22-26-0-4), who had already locked up a playoff berth.
