Marine’s remains scheduled to arrive from Afghanistan

The body of the 22-year-old Marine from Spokane who died New Year’s Day in Afghanistan is scheduled to arrive Friday night at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del., a Marine spokesman said. Sgt. Jacob Hess, an aircraft mechanic, was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province. Details about the incident that led to Hess’s death still were unavailable on Friday, said Lt. Hector Alejandro, a spokesman for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based in North Carolina. Hess, a 2009 graduate of North Central High School, enlisted in the Marines in October 2010. He received the following medals for his service: the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He is survived by his wife, Bridget Hess; his mother, Keirsten Lyons of Spokane; his father, Mike Hess of California; and his brother Cameron Hess, a recent graduate of North Central High School.
