Dan Keplin scored 21 points and J.T. Phelan added 19 points and 11 rebounds as East Valley thwarted Clarkston’s furious fourth-quarter rally and beat the Bantams in a Great Northern League boys basketball opener Friday night at East Valley.
The Knights led by 23 points in the third quarter, but Clarkston (7-1, 0-1) cut the deficit to three with 2 minutes left. East Valley (5-3, 1-0) regrouped and iced the game at the free-throw line.
The Bantams’ DePaul Blunt scored 18 points, Trevor Sperry had 16 and C.J. Johnson chipped in 13.
Pullman 68, West Valley 44: The Greyhounds (6-1, 1-0 GNL) took control with a 21-9 second-quarter surge and topped the visiting Eagles (7-2, 0-1). Race Martin scored 18 points, David Ungerer added 14 and A.J. Miles chipped in 12 for Pullman. West Valley was led by Jake Love’s game-high 24 points.
Deer Park 51, Cheney 47: Nate Guske scored 19 points and the Stags (5-3, 1-0 GNL) grabbed control in the fourth quarter and beat the visiting Blackhawks (1-6, 0-1). A final quarter plagued by turnovers and missed free throws doomed Cheney. Brett Wyborney and Keenan Williams combined for 26 points for the Blackhawks.
Newport 55, Freeman 52 (OT): Jeron Konkright scored all 12 of the Grizzlies’ points in overtime and Newport (5-4, 1-1) edged the visiting Scotties (2-4, 0-1). Konkright, who missed a 3-pointer that would have won it at the end of regulation, made 13 of 16 free throws and finished with 36 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Maine scored 18 points for Freeman.
Colfax 38, Northwest Christian 37: Kasey Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left and the Bulldogs (5-4, 4-1) held on to beat the visiting Crusaders (8-3, 3-2). Colfax led by seven points entering the fourth, but Northwest Christian rallied and took a 37-35 lead before Johnson’s 3-pointer. Johnson finished with 15 points. Ryan Ricks led the Crusaders with 12 points.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 52, Liberty 42: Dylan Hartz scored 17 points and Tyler Frederick added 13 as the Broncos (6-1, 3-1) clipped the host Lancers (9-2, 3-2). Lind-Ritzville/Sprague outscored Liberty 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 11-point lead into the half. Ryan Thayer had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.
St. George’s 68, Springdale 45: Dexter Sienko scored 24 points and Will Tender added 22 as the Dragons (11-0, 6-0) took control early and beat the host Chargers (1-10, 0-5). St. George’s outscored Springdale 24-7 in the first quarter. Jordan Cloud tallied a team-high 21 points for Springdale.
Davenport 42, Reardan 38: Wyatt Evers scored 15 points and Austin Zellar added 12 as the Gorillas (5-6, 2-4) defeated visiting Reardan (4-7, 0-6). Brandon Ruben scored 14 points and Skylar Peone 10 for the Indians. Davenport took off to a 15-9 lead in the first period, but hit just 3 of 12 shots in the second period and led 21-18 at halftime. The lead changed hands a few times in the third quarter before the Gorillas went ahead for good.
Northeast 1B North
Cusick 75, Northport 33: Alec Bluff and Chad Browneagle guided the Panthers (7-2, 3-0) to an easy win over the visiting Mustangs (0-9, 0-4). The duo combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds and made 16 of 20 shots from the floor. Lorenz Martins tallied a team-high 12 points for Northport.
Republic 63, Columbia 30: Taylor Campbell scored 19 points and Aaron Fritts and Alex Rivera added 10 apiece as the Tigers (4-4, 2-2) routed the visiting Lions (2-7, 1-2). Republic outscored Columbia 23-2 in the third quarter to take a commanding 32-point lead into the fourth. Grant Jones tallied a team-high nine points for Columbia.
Rosalia 60, LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 56: Craig Nelson scored 33 points and the Spartans (4-3, 2-1) shook off a sluggish start and edged the Tigercats (2-3, 1-2) in LaCrosse. Rosalia outscored LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 51-41 after falling behind by six points in the first quarter. Joe Guske led LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus with 32 points.
Lake City tournament
South Kitsap 69, Lake City 67 (OT): Calvin Bakalarski made five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points as the Wolves edged the Timberwolves (7-2) at the Lake City tournament in Coeur d’Alene. Kyle Guice led Lake City with 25 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. The Timberwolves take on Columbia River today.
Wilsonville 52, Sandpoint 30: Zach Reicle scored 20 points and the Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs (5-4). Jeremiah Gagnon tallied a team-high 10 points for Sandpoint, which plays Vernon today.
Lakeland 61, Vernon 40: Hayden Nosworthy led three players in double figures with 15 points as the Hawks (5-4) topped Vernon (B.C.). Lakeland’s Jacob Plunkett added 12 points and Tyrel Derrick chipped in 10. Lakeland plays Wilsonville today.
Bothell 70, Post Falls 68 (OT): Josh Martin scored 32 points and the Cougars edged the visiting Trojans (7-4). Nick Hall led Post Falls with 18 points. Max McCullough chipped in 14 points and Luke Anderson added 11 for the Trojans.
Kellogg 57, Troy 26: Tucker Gust scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds to guide the host Wildcats (5-2) to the win.
