Oversight needed

I am very disappointed that our local police agencies feel that they can perform objective investigations of each other. I have lost faith in our local elected officials to intervene on our behalf. These investigations should be turned over to an objective group or a federal marshal. There have been major changes in Spokane Police Department or Spokane County Sheriff’s Office patterns and practices over the last year. The extra training has helped and is appreciated. It is time to finish the job and turn over all internal investigations to an outside party or elected commission.

I believe that any voting citizen should be able to run for a position on the reviewing commission. Having direct accountability to the public will enhance transparency and return unwavering public support to the police and sheriff’s office.

Thank you to all of our public servants who strive to be the best at their jobs. There is nothing wrong with helping fellow officers and other public workers reach the same levels. In closing, I am proud to be from Spokane and will do my best to ensure it is a safe place for my grandkids to raise their families, too.
