WSU women hold on for 61-59 victory

Lia Galdeira scored 16 points and Tia Presley 14 as Washington State held off Arizona for a 61-59 women’s basketball victory in Pullman on Sunday.

The Cougars (8-6, 2-0) held a 14-point lead early in the second half but then had to weather a Wildcats rally after shooting only 28.6 percent in the second half following an opening 20 minutes when WSU hit half its shots.

Arizona (4-8, 0-2) caught, but never passed, WSU four times in the second half. The Cougars grabbed the lead for good on Shalie Dheensaw’s layup with 3:32 left. A basket by Galdeira had WSU up by four with 53 seconds remaining before the Wildcats cut it to two. WSU’s Sage Romberg missed a shot in the lane but her defense resulted in a loose ball and the Wildcats didn’t get a shot off.

Romberg finished with 10 points for WSU, which had a 40-30 advantage on the boards, including 16 offensive rebounds.

(24) Arizona State 78, Washington 60: Katie Hempen came off the bench to score a dozen points to lead the Sun Devils over the Huskies in Seattle.

Washington (8-5, 1-1 Pac-12) swept ASU (12-2, 1-1) last year, but had lost 15 of 16 games before that and now has lost 16 of its last 19 against the Sun Devils.

Arizona State bounced back quickly from an 85-78 upset by Washington State in the conference opener Friday, racing to a 47-29 lead at intermission.

Kelsey Moos and Deja Mann each scored 11 points for ASU.

Jazmine Davis scored 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting to lead the Huskies. Kelsey Plum added another 16 points.

Men

Salt Lake 66, North Idaho 64: The Cardinals lost a heartbreaker to 14th-ranked and defending Scenic West Athletic Conference champion Salt Lake CC on Saturday. The Cardinals had a 29-25 halftime lead but couldn’t stop Salt Lake big man Neal Monson, who led all scorers with 18 points and added 10 rebounds. Gary Payton added 13 points and nine rebounds for Salt Lake (15-3, 2-1 SWAC).  

The Cardinals (15-4, 2-2) were led by Cole Kesler’s 17 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the arc. Bryce Leavitt added 12 points and four assists for the Cardinals and Braxton Tucker added 10 points and nine rebounds.
