Suspect arrested in weekend shooting

Jahvory Kinard, 19, faces assault and robbery charges

From staff reports
A 19-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning after police say he shot a woman in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant during a robbery attempt last week. Jahvory Kinard was booked into Spokane County Jail on assault and robbery charges, according to Spokane police. Kinard is suspected of shooting the 23-year-old victim more than once in the chest during what she described as a robbery attempt shortly before 8 p.m. Friday. Spokane Police Lt. Mark Griffiths said Thursday the victim arrived to buy $900 in prescription medication from Kinard. He is the brother of Kenan Adams-Kinard, one of two 16-year-olds accused of beating World War II veteran Delbert Belton, 88, to death last year. Griffiths said the arrest was based on evidence found in the car the shooting victim was driving at the time of the alleged crime, not Kinard’s associations. “We do not target people individually,” Griffiths said. “This person committed a crime. We investigated the incident. The evidence has led to him as a suspect in this incident.” Kinard, whom the victim only knew as “JV,” reportedly produced a gun and demanded cash. She resisted, and Kinard shot the woman, who then drove herself to another parking lot, according to investigators. She was picked up there and dropped off at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Spokane Police said Thursday they thought the woman had been released. She was not listed among hospital patients Wednesday afternoon. Griffiths said if charges are filed against her related to the drug exchange, “they will be quite a bit later.” It is not the first time Kinard has pointed a gun, according to court documents. In a case pending trial, Kinard and a taxi driver allegedly pointed weapons at each other during a confrontation in September 2012. The driver, who shot at Kinard with a stun gun as well, said he was attempting to break up what he thought was an assault on a female member of the group, according to statements to police. The trial has been delayed several times. It was set for trial next month. Griffiths said detectives were executing a search warrant at a lower South Hill address where Kinard was apprehended Thursday morning. A weapon in the case has not yet been discovered, he said. Kinard could make his first court appearance on the assault and robbery charges as early as Friday.
