Callendret lifts Vandals over Broncs

Buzzer-beating layup gives Idaho 86-85 double- overtime victory at Texas-Pan American

EDINBURG, Texas – Perrion Callendret’s layup with one second remaining in double-overtime lifted Idaho over Texas-Pan American 86-85 Thursday.

The layup accounted for Callendret’s only points in the game. The Vandals (7-10, 1-2 Western Athletic Conference) were led by Connor Hill with 28 points, while Stephen Madison had 19 points and 14 rebounds, Glen Dean added 13 points and Sekou Wiggs 12.

Javorn Farrell scored 22 points with 17 rebounds and seven assists for UTPA (4-13, 0-2). Shaquille Hines and Shaquille Boga both had 19 for the Broncs.

Farrell made a layup and a pair of free throws to give UTPA a 77-75 lead at the start of the second OT, then made another pair of free throws with 59 seconds left to give the Broncs a 5-point lead at 84-79.

But Wiggs made four consecutive free throws to draw the Vandals back to one with 33 seconds before Callendret’s heroics ended the affair.

“I couldn’t be happier, especially for the guys in the locker room,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said after the win. “Our guys hung together all night long and fought. At the end, we had four of our five starters fouled out. It’s hard to win on the road in the WAC, and when you miss as many free throws as we did (UI went 22-36), it makes it even harder. But what a great way to find a way to get our first WAC win of the season.”

Idaho next plays Saturday night at 5 against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.
