Spurs keep rolling, slam T-wolves

NBA: Kawhi Leonard scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, and the San Antonio Spurs held off the Minnesota Timberwolves 104-86 on Sunday night in San Antonio for their fourth straight win.

Tim Duncan had 15 points and Tony Parker added 14 points and 10 assists for Western Conference-leading San Antonio. Matt Bonner also scored 14 points – including 4-for-5 shooting on 3-pointers – and Marco Belinelli had 13 points and Patty Mills added 10.

Nikola Pekovic scored 22 points to lead Minnesota. Kevin Love had 14 points and Alexey Shved added 11.

Already without Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter, the Spurs lost Danny Green early in the second quarter to a sprained finger. Minus two of their top wings, Leonard took over in the second half.

• Grizzlies defeat Hawks: Mike Conley had 21 points and 13 assists and Zach Randolph added 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 108-101 victory over the visiting Atlanta Hawks.

• Kings thrash Cavs: Isaiah Thomas scored 26 points to lead the Sacramento Kings to their third straight victory, a 124-80 rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers in Sacramento, Calif.

Ducks blank Red Wings, extend lead

NHL: Jonas Hiller made 22 saves in his 14th consecutive victory, and the steamrolling Anaheim Ducks beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 for their 17th victory in 18 games. Andrew Cogliano scored in the second period for the NHL-leading Ducks, who improved to 19-0-2 at home this season despite playing without injured scoring leader Ryan Getzlaf.

• Sabres sneak by Caps : Cody Hodgson decided a lackluster game with the only goal in the shootout, and the Buffalo Sabres avoided matching the longest road losing streak in franchise history with a 2-1 win over the host Washington Capitals.

• Islanders outlast Stars: John Tavares scored with 1:24 to go and Brock Nelson added an empty-netter, leading the streaking New York Islanders to a 4-2 victory over the slumping Stars in Dallas.

• Blackhawks drop Oilers: Marian Hossa had a power-play goal and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the visiting Edmonton Oilers 5-3 to end a three-game losing streak.

Rangers ground Flyers: Daniel Carcillo, Rick Nash and Derick Brassard scored less than 10 minutes into the game, and Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves as the New York Rangers routed the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 in New York.

• Leafs stop Devils: James van Riemsdyk scored in the shootout to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Toronto.

• Wild smash Predators: Dany Heatley had a goal and an assist, Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves for his first career shutout, and the Minnesota Wild beat the Nashville Predators 4-0.

Iowa compounds Buckeyes’ woes

Men’s basketball: Roy Devin Marble scored 22 points, Aaron White added 19 and No. 20 Iowa ended the game on a 22-9 run to hand No. 3 Ohio State its second loss of the week, 84-74 in Columbus, Ohio.

• Wildcats upset Illini: Tre Demps scored 11 points and made three late 3-pointers to lead Northwestern to a 49-43 upset of in-state rival No. 23 Illinois in Evanston, Ill. Drew Crawford added 14 points for the Wildcats.

• Aztecs continue streak: JJ O’Brien had 18 points and 11 rebounds as No. 13 San Diego State extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 79-72 victory at Air Force.

• Cardinals tame Mustangs: Luke Hancock’s career-high 23 points, including two free throws with 46 seconds remaining, helped No. 12 Louisville hold off visiting SMU for a 71-63 victory in a meeting of Hall of Fame coaches Rick Pitino and Larry Brown.

Irish stave off Virginia’s upset bid

Women’s basketball: Natalie Achonwa scored a career-high 26 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and No. 2 Notre Dame survived a late challenge by host Virginia and beat the Cavaliers 79-72.

• Stanford downs Buffs: Chiney Ogwumike had 34 points and 16 rebounds to lead No. 4 Stanford over No. 17 Colorado 87-77 in Boulder, Colo.

• Devils nip Bruins: Adrianne Thomas scored 11 points and hit a key 3-pointer to lift No. 23 Arizona State to a 59-57 victory over visiting UCLA.

Grantham leaves Georgia for Louisville

College Football: Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has accepted the same position at Louisville.

Grantham had been with the Bulldogs for four seasons. He was entering the final year of a three-year contract worth $850,000 per year. ESPN reported Grantham will earn $1 million per year at Louisville.

Wise, Bowman earn trips to Sochi

Winter sports: David Wise and Maddie Bowman have clinched spots on the U.S. Olympic team by winning ski halfpipe events at the U.S. Grand Prix in Breckenridge, Colo.

Wise scored 89 points on his second run to edge Mike Riddle of Canada on a snowy day that made the halfpipe a little slower than usual.

The next-highest American was Simon Dumont, who finished fourth overall. Bowman had a solid first run to hold off Ayana Onozuka of Japan.

• U.S. bobsledders struggle: Latvia won a four-man World Cup bobsled race in St. Moritz, Switzerland, while the U.S. team capped another rough week after a solid start to the season.

Reigning Olympic champion Steven Holcomb and his team of Steve Langton, Curt Tomasevicz and Chris Fogt were seventh in 2:10.29.

USA-2 pilot Nick Cunningham and his team were disqualified and awarded no points because one of his push athletes, Dallas Robinson, fell out of the sled shortly after a crash.

Latvian pilot Oskars Melbardis earned his first victory of the season after not finishing better than fourth in a World Cup race.

• Hirscher takes slalom: Marcel Hirscher of Austria won a World Cup slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland, to seize the lead in the overall and discipline standings.

Hirscher, the two-time defending overall champion, sliced through the gates on the steep final pitch to beat Andre Myhrer of Sweden by 0.29 seconds. Teenager Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway was third, trailing 0.66 behind Hirscher’s combined two-run time of 1 minute, 49.75 seconds.

• Gagnon bags first win:    Marie-Michele Gagnon of Canada won a women’s World Cup super-combined event in Altenmarket-Zauchensee, Austria for her maiden victory.

It was the first win for a Canadian woman in a combined event at World Cup level since 1984. Gagnon was 1.37 seconds off the lead after the super-G portion earlier Sunday but posted the second-fastest time in the slalom run to finish in an aggregate 2 minutes, 5.55 seconds.

Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria came 0.32 back in second, and Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany by 0.39 in third.
