Vandersloot makes cut for USA hoops

Women’s basketball: Former Gonzaga University All-American Courtney Vandersloot is among the 33 players who have been named to the 2014-16 USA Basketball Women’s National Team pool, from which the 2014 USA World Championship team will be selected.

Vandersloot took part in the USA Basketball mini-camp in October, with that camp used to identify the players chosen for the pool. She is one of 18 players in the pool that were members of the 2009-12 USA Basketball Women’s National Team.

Eagles’ Jois collects Big Sky honor

Men’s basketball: Eastern Washington forward Venky Jois and Northen Colorado forward Tim Huskisson are the Big Sky Conference co-players of the week.

Jois, a sophomore forward from Boronia, Australia, averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and 1.5 steals per game, as the Eagles evened their conference record with home wins over Montana and Montana State.

Huskisson averaged 17 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and one steal per game in two wins.

Recruiting expert to speak

High school scene: National motivational and educational speaker Jack Renkens will address the subject of college sports recruiting Wednesday night at Mt. Spokane High School.

Renkens, a former college coach, athletic director and recruiter, will speak to students, parents and coaches about the myths and realities of the college evaluation progress in a one-hour program.

The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m.
