Obituary: Vognild, Larry Lee

VOGNILD, Larry Lee Larry Lee Vognild, 81, died January 3, 2014 at Providence Everett Medical Center of congestive heart failure.

He was born January 21, 1932 in Spokane, but was a long-time Everett resident.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Helen and James Howard Vognild.

He graduated from Everett High School class of 1950.

He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged early 1954.

Later that year he became a firefighter with the Everett Fire Department and remained in that career until a heart attack forced his retirement in 1977.

He held the rank of Battalion Chief at that time.

In 1978 he was elected to the position of State Senator for the 38th Legislative District.

During that time he was Majority Whip, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader of the Democratic Caucus.

His affiliations and interests included the Medic One Foundation, Everett-Evergreen Kiwanis, Elks #479, American Legion Post #6, E.H.S.

Class Reunion Committee, and golfing with the Senior Men’s Group at Walter Hall with his golfing buddy, Fred.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Dorothy; two daughters and sons-in-law Valerie Vognild Kellogg (Robert), grandchildren Nichole, Jennifer; Margo Vognild Fox (Ron), grandchildren Kaila, Keith; stepdaughter Lori Reese (Roger), granddaughter Melissa, grandson Jon (Jenn), great-grandson, Hayden; stepson, Norman Larsen (Cathy), granddaughter, Michelle (Gary), twin great-grandsons, Jordan and Justin.

Please join us for a celebration of his life that will be held at New Life Church, 6830 Highland Drive Everett, WA, Saturday January 18 at 11:00 am.
