Obituary: Schimmels, Gary Lee

Age 75

SCHIMMELS, Gary Lee 1938 - 2014 Beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on January 15, 2014.

Gary was born in the Spokane Valley on July 6, 1938, to Harold “H.E.”

and Janet Schimmels.

Born into a construction family and the eldest of seven brothers, Gary quickly learned the value of hard work, perseverance and integrity.

He worked in the construction industry for over 35 years; from crane operator on Interstate 90 to construction superintendent, installing roads, utilities, paving projects and more.

Throughout his career, Gary’s determination and work ethic inspired others.

He eventually retired from construction and later owned a locksmith shop.

As a third generation and life-long valley resident, Gary most recently served 10 years on the Spokane Valley City Council.

He loved the valley and wanted a city of which the citizens could be proud.

He was actively involved and served on many boards and organizations in his community including: Consolidated Irrigation District, the Knight of Columbus and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards.

He was admired, respected and loved by many people.

His family remembers him most for his honesty, loyalty and fairness.

As a father, his way of teaching was hands-on.

He would supply the tools and allow his children to make their own mistakes or gain their own victories.

He instilled the same values in his children and grandchildren that he learned throughout his life.

Gary leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Myrna (Schultheis); beloved miniature-schnauzers, Sadie and Sally, and five children: Theresa, Sheila (Mike) Dahl, Melissa (Dan) Higgins, Gary (Nancy) Schimmels, and Alicia (Nate) Kane.

He was a devoted grandfather to eight grandchildren: Jacob, Kathryn, Patrick, Joseph, Olivia, Mary Frances, Trevor and Kendra.

Gary is survived by his brothers: Ed (Mary Jo), Dick (Judy), Mike (Carol), Jim, Dan (Kristen); and sister-in-law Shar.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dave.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Building Fund or SCRAPS.
