Spokane police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of stealing a car and crashing it in west Spokane.

Police received a report about 7 a.m. that a man had assaulted another man and stolen his Toyota Rav-4. Officer Robert Collins spotted a vehicle matching that description near Sunset Boulevard and Rustle Road about 11 a.m., according to a police news release.

The driver of the Rav-4 sped up, lost control of the SUV and crashed into a utility pole near South Lindeke Street and West 13th Avenue, police said. When the man fled on foot, police dog Rav was brought in to track him. The fleeing man jumped into Latah Creek near High Bridge Park and was arrested shortly after, police said.

Dustin A. Spears, 28, was arrested on suspicion of eluding police, possession of stolen property and on a Department of Corrections warrant. More charges are anticipated in the case.
